어린이 날의 유래 및 현재
The origins of Children's Day
1919년의 3·1독립운동을 계기로 어린이들에게 민족정신을 고취하고자, 1923년 방정환(方定煥)을 포함한 일본유학생 모임인 ‘색동회’가 주축이 되어 5월 1일을 ‘어린이날’로 정하였다가 1927년 날짜를 5월 첫 일요일로 변경하였다.
1923년 5월 1일 첫 번째 어린이날 기념행사에서 ‘어른들에게 드리는 글’이 배포되었는데 “어린이에게 경어를 쓰시되 늘 부드럽게 하여 주시오”라고 당부했다. 방정환은 독립된 인격체로서의 어린이에 대한 존중을 부탁한 것이다. 첫 번째 어린이날의 구호는 “씩씩하고 참된 소년이 됩시다. 그리고 늘 서로 사랑하며 도와갑시다”였다.
1945년 광복 이후에는 5월 5일로 정하여 행사를 하여왔으며, 1961년에 제정, 공포된 「아동복지법」에서는 ‘어린이날’을 5월 5일로 하였고, 1973년에는 기념일로 지정하였다가 1975년부터는 공휴일로 제정하였다. 2018년부터는 어린이날이 주말이나 다른 공휴일과 겹칠 경우, 그 다음 비공휴일을 대체휴일로 지정하고 있다.
이 날은 어린이가 따뜻한 사랑 속에서 바르고 씩씩하게 자랄 수 있는 계기를 마련하도록 하며, 불우한 어린이들이 인간으로서의 긍지와 자신감을 가질 수 있도록 격려, 위로하고, 모범어린이 및 아동복지사업의 숨은 유공자를 발굴, 표창하는 한편, 어린이들이 즐길 수 있는 여러 가지 행사를 실시하여 체력향상 및 정서함양을 도모한다.
각 시·도, 시·군 및 단체별로 어린이가 참석하는 기념식을 거행하는데, 기념식전에서는 「대한민국어린이헌장」을 낭독하고 착한 어린이·청소년을 시상한다. 또한, 어린이체육대회·웅변대회·글짓기대회·가장행렬·묘기시범·밤불꽃놀이·어린이 큰잔치 등을 거행하기도 한다.

At the first Children's Day celebration on May 1, 1923, a letter to adults was distributed, urging them to "use honorifics for children, but always do so gently." He was asking for respect for children as independent individuals. The slogan for the first Children's Day was "Let's be cheerful and true boys, and let's always love and help each other."
After the liberation of Korea in 1945, it was celebrated on May 5, and in the Child Welfare Act enacted and promulgated in 1961, "Children's Day" was designated as May 5, and in 1973, it was designated as a commemorative day and then as a national holiday in 1975. Since 2018, if Children's Day falls on a weekend or other public holiday, the next non-holiday is designated as an alternative holiday.
The day aims to provide an opportunity for children to grow up with warm love, encourage and comfort disadvantaged children so that they can have pride and confidence in themselves as human beings, discover and recognize model children and hidden contributors to child welfare projects, and promote physical fitness and emotional development by holding various events for children to enjoy.
Each city, province, county, city-\gun, and organization holds a ceremony attended by children, and before the ceremony, the Children's Charter of the Republic of Korea is read and good children and youth are awarded. In addition, children's sports competitions, oratorical contests, writing contests, masquerade processions, demonstrations of skills, night fireworks, and children's feasts are held.
